Clay Planet (formerly Claymaker) originally started in in the early 1960's when
entrepreneur Marshall Wikey started selling ceramic supplies out of his garage. He expanded in the 1970's to a retail facility in San Jose, California, where he sold his own line of kilns, glazes and
clay.
The business was expanded when in 1981 the business
was purchased by Robert Millavec, and moved to the location on North 13th Street in San Jose. A 2500 square foot retail showroom was added.
New clay and glazes were added and after 24 years in the business, Claymaker was sold to the current owners in early
2004. The current owners are a group of potters and friends who because of their love of clay and the clay community took the venture over, renovated the entire space, showroom and warehouse, with a goal of taking the business to the next level.
Additional services were added to the business, including expanded
repair services, firing, many new products, and workshops.
With the outstanding expertise of master claymaker Joe Ramos, we produce clay of top quality and are continually developing new clay bodies to meet the needs of the pottery community that we
serve.
The name Claymaker was replaced with Clay Planet officially in June of 2004. We certainly look forward to supplying our customers with the best equipment, tools, and advice we can offer. We hope to see you down at Clay Planet soon!
The Clay Planet Family,
Joe, Matt, J.J., M.J., and John
